RACHEL MCINTYRE SMITH
is a singer-songwriter based in Chattanooga, TN.
She grew up in the small town of Oliver Springs, TN from which she draws much of her musical inspiration. She has a passion for writing music, and plays piano, guitar, ukulele, and clarinet.
How did Rachel get started in music?
When she was 9, she began taking piano lessons to one up a classroom rival of hers. She discovered her love for music, and continued lessons for 10 years- winning the state piano competition twice, receiving the Paderewski Medal in Guild, and earning her high school diploma in Social Music. She began playing clarinet for middle school band and went on to become section leader. She taught herself ukulele at 15 and guitar at 16. She sang solos in theatre arts plays, and got involved in church music during her senior year of high school which blossomed into her passion for worship music.
When did she start writing music?
Rachel began writing music when she was in middle school in a Snoopy notebook that she would hide in the bottom drawer of her dresser. She describes these songs as "absolute pure trash"- and says that she didn't start writing good songs until the end of her Freshman year of college at UTC.
